Lighting the Dark - The goal is to empower audiences

Working closely with the Dancenorth team, Chris Dyke a dancer and choreographer living with Down Syndrome, has developed Lighting the Dark, a show that will transform the stage into a world filled with radical hope and love.

Dancenorth’s Artistic Director Kyle Page has worked closely with Chris for over a decade. The pair first met at a dance workshop in 2012 and quickly became friends. Since then, Chris has worked closely with Dancenorth, having choreographed two solo works and created a dance film titled Common Colours. Lighting the Dark is the newest collaboration between Chris and the Dancenorth ensemble, and its his biggest dream yet.

Lighting the Dark brings together my heroes – Batman, Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman, Banksy and David Bowie – in a show that I hope will leave people feeling a sense of happiness, connection and love. The show begins by introducing all my friends, before an epic battle where we discover some of their superpowers; there’s a crazy scene with lots of references to some of Banksy’s most famous street art; and then it gets a little more tender as we think about disconnection, connection and the power of love. The goal is to empower audiences, and I hope it will inspire people to make their own dreams come true.” - Chris Dyke

Chris hopes audiences feel moved by the show, “I want people to feel happiness, connection and love. I hope the show inspires everyone to take it to the next level.” Chris continues to achieve his goals with each show he has worked on, and he has even greater plans for this performance, “Lighting the Dark is the biggest dream yet and now I want to take it on a World Tour to stops including Adelaide, Hong Kong, New York, France, London and South Africa.”

A masterpiece of collaboration and community, Lighting the Dark is a profound celebration, traversing individual and universal truths in a dance to the very centre of what it means to be human. Make sure to get tickets to see Lighting the Dark at the Thomas Dixon Centre on 12 — 14 Sep.
